Factory or Intermediary? How to Know Who You Are Really Dealing With

Most contacts an Argentine company obtains at a trade fair or online platform are not manufacturers. How to distinguish them before sending an advance payment.

In China, trading companies are legal, common, and often convenient. The issue arises when dealing with an intermediary believing they are the direct factory.

What can be verified before committing funds
  1. Business License: Confirms if registered for manufacturing or trading.
  2. Bank Account Match: Account name must match the official license name exactly.
  3. Export History: Verifiable aduanar records of volume and continuity.
  4. Litigation Records: Official check for past disputes or sanctions.
  5. On-Site Inspection: The only way to confirm physical capacity and active lines.

Practical Rule: Verification depth must match the advance payment amount at risk.

Canton Fair: How to Choose the Right Phase

The most common mistake is choosing the phase based on your company's industry. It must be selected based on the specific product you are sourcing.

The Canton Fair takes place twice a year (April and October), divided into three 5-day phases with setup intervals in between. Each phase brings together distinct product categories that do not overlap.

The common mistake: A food company assumes it belongs in the food phase. However, if sourcing packaging or labeling machinery, those equipment categories are located in Phase I (industrial machinery). The phase is determined by the product you wish to purchase, not by the buyer's industry.

General composition of each phase
  • Phase I: Industrial machinery, tools, hardware, building materials, electrical products, vehicles, and chemicals.
  • Phase II: Consumer goods, gifts, ceramics, glassware, furniture, home decor, and toys.
  • Phase III: Textiles, footwear, office supplies, healthcare, medical devices, and food products.
Key aspects to resolve prior to travel

Advance buyer registration, relevant consular visa, complex venue logistics (over 1 million m²), and post-fair follow-up strategy.

Want to know which phase fits your product? Contact us indicating the product you are sourcing, and we will guide you on phases, registration deadlines, and trip preparation.

Payments Guarantees Contracts

How Payment for an Operation with China is Structured

Payment instruments, when to use each, and where the real risk lies.

Telegraphic Transfer (T/T): The most widely used yet exposed method (30% to 50% advance deposit and remaining balance against shipping documents). Risk is concentrated on the advance deposit. Critical point: verify any last-minute bank account changes via a secondary communication channel to prevent fraud.

Letter of Credit (L/C): Transfers financial risk to the banking system. Requires strict documentary compliance and is ideal for large transactions or new counterparties.

Documentary Collection: Banks process documents against payment or acceptance without assuming payment guarantees.

What no payment instrument can replace
  • A sales contract with clear technical specifications.
  • Prior verification of the counterparty.
  • Correct selection of Incoterms (FOB vs. CIF).

Foreign Exchange Note: Regulations, terms, and conditions must be verified against current Central Bank regulations when finalizing the operation.
